| Karl Henning (b. 1960) fell in love with the sound of the clarinet at age 10 and has been learning, practicing and creating music ever since…in pursuit of the Muse.
Formally, Henning holds a B.Mus. with double major in composition and clarinet performance from College of Wooster (Wooster, Ohio) where he studied with Jack Gallagher, Paul Schwartz and Nancy Garlisch; a M.A. in composition from University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA) where he studied with Judith Shatin, Walter Ross and Douglas Hargrave; and a Ph.D. in composition from the University of Buffalo (Buffalo, NY) where he studied with Charles Wuorinen and Louis Andriessen.
After his doctoral work, Henning lived for four years in and near St. Petersburg, Russia. There he studied the canals, bridges, cathedrals, white nights and starry winter skies of St. Petersburg. This was a period of informal arts study which he feels in many ways equal in importance to his years of formal training.
This year, 2000, is the fourth consecutive year in which his music has been played and sung on three continents (North America, Europe and Australia). For the past four years, Henning has lived, written and performed in the Boston area. His wife (Maria Bablyak) and mom-in-law (Irina Pisarenko) are both are formidably talented artists, designers and architects.

| Michael Hoffman’s first film score for the film “Picnic at the Cemetery” – written and directed by Elizabeta Zemljic - was completed in November 2000 and in September 2001 won the award for “Best foreign short film” at the NY Film and Video Festival. (Listen to excerpts at www.stellarartist.com) This latest achievement is just one more feather in this very talented young conductor’s cap. Mr. Hoffman has been conducting in Russia (St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Glinka Theater Orchestra), The United States, The Republic of Macedonia, Denmark and Sweden. He made his professional debut with The National Radio and Television Orchestra of Macedonia where, after a single concert, he was immediately invited to conduct the remainder of the season including many live and taped broadcasts throughout Eastern Europe and North Africa. Mr. Hoffman also conducted and arranged for the Radio and Television Big Band during his eight-month stay. Most recently, Mr. Hoffman has been conducting in Scandinavia as the Music Director of the Sinfonietta at the Malmö Conservatory of Music and the Music Director of The Malmö City Orchestra (Malmö Orkesterförening). Mr. Hoffman has conducted Ensemble Ars Nova on both Sweden's and Denmark’s National Radios and has conducted on their recording, “Stefan Östersjö” - a Swedish Grammy winner for best classical CD, which was released in December 1997.
In 1997, Mr. Hoffman founded Absolut Kammarmusik, a chamber orchestra based in Malmö, Sweden, of which he is the Artistic Director and conductor. In 1998 he conducted Absolut Kammarmusik on Stefan Cooper’s debut album “Meditation”, which he also produced.
One of Mr. Hoffman’s most attractive assets is his familiarity with a wide variety of musical genres. His twenty years of experience as a trumpet player exposed him not only to the classical repertoire but to jazz, Latin and pop/rock styles.
Born in New York in 1962 of Dutch and Moldavian parents, Mr. Hoffman received a Bachelors Degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Southern California and Masters Degree in Conducting from Arizona State University. He has also studied trumpet and conducting at the University of Michigan, Studio Production at the Malmö Conservatory, Sweden and composition at S.U.N.Y. Purchase, NY. | Stefan was born in The Netherlands in 1972, where he studied piano and conducting at the Utrecht Conservatoire with Alan Weiss. During that time Stefan was also conductor of the Utrecht Chamber Orchestra.
After receiving his concert-recital degree for piano in 1995 he continued his conducting studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Christopher Seaman. He was awarded the Ricordi Conducting prize there in 1996.
At present Stefan combines the positions of musical director with Bristol Concert Orchestra, Reading Symphony Orchestra, Brent Opera, London, The Aries Ensemble for 20th Century Music and different orchestras in Europe. As a pianist Stefan plays chamber music recitals in the UK, Holland and Austria.

| ROBERT HOWARD (b. 1977) is a composer from Merseyside, England, now living in London. Robert studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, Birmingham University and currently at Goldsmiths College, University of London (PhD) with Philip Cashian. He has composed a wide variety of (primarily) instrumental works, from solo pieces to orchestral works. Robert's music has been played by various ensembles including BCMG, Gemini (Family of Man, Dual Form), City of London Sinfonia (The Island, SPNM shortlisted 2000), Goldsmiths Sinfonia (Promenade, SPNM shortlisted 2001), the Kreutzer Quartet, Concillium Brass Ensemble, IXION (Lines on A Walk II conducted by Michael Finnissy) and by soloists such as Simon Limbrick and Stephen Gutman. In 1999 his String Quartet No.1. won the Gregynog Young Composers' Award of Wales and his piano music has won first prizes at several music festivals.
Robert also has a keen interest in composing for amateurs; he has composed extensively for fellow students, for several youth orchestras on Merseyside and most recently in the series of pieces titled Promenade and Lines on A Walk. These have been widely performed and recorded by several COMA ensembles. Robert is also a visiting tutor at Goldsmiths College, and bassoonist and conductor. He is currently Chair of the Forum London Composers Group. Robert's Promenade IV was published and recorded by Forum as part of their Re:Sound pack and his music is distributed by Incalcando Contemporary Music Publishing (www.incalcando.com). Future projects include a work for large orchestra inspired by the John Piper Baptistry Window in Coventry Cathedral.

| Gregory Hubert was born in Toronto Canada and began his musical studies at the age of four. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music, the University of Toronto and the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Madrid, Spain. His cello teachers have included David Hethrington (Toronto Symphony) Desmond Hoebig and Denis Brott.
Gregory began his conducting studies in Canada, with David Miller and the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. In 1990 he decided to leave Canada and was accepted to study with Enrique Garcia-Asensio in Madrid, where he conducted the Spanish Radio Television Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica de Madrid and other ensembles comprised of musicians from the Orquesta Nacional de Espana. From 1990-1993 he was a participant in master- classes with Sergui Celibidache.
In 1994 Mr. Hubert went to Holland where he recieved his Dutch Nationality and currently resides in Amsterdam
Since 1994 he has been the conductor of the Haarlems Symfonie Orkest and in 1996 he founded the baroque orchestra, the Colenso Consort. In addition to these duties he works regularly as guest conductor with many Dutch orchestras, including the Helikon Orkest Eindhoven, and the Mozart Capelle in Amsterdam

| Milena Injac was born in Nis, Serbia in 1969. She took her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Orchestra, Opera and Choir Conducting at the Belgrade University of Arts Faculty of Music and perfected her skills working with Jorma Panula, Peter Eotvos (Bartok Seminar) and Salvador Mas Conde (Vienna Master class - as one of best participants). With the Nis Chamber Symphony Orchestra, Milena Injac won First Prize on the Chamber Orchestra Competition at the Third International "Music World Festival" in Italia (Fivizzano)2000, and First Prize with the Nis Chamber Choir at the Christmas Choir Festival in Greece (Katerini), 1999. She performed as conductor in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Macedonia, Hungary, Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, Sweden, Spain and United Kingdom. I am really interested in developing a "Chamber Art Song" genre, a genre consisting of chamber works written in the art song style, for voice and instruments. And so I have built up a repertoire exploiting this genre -- Bassoon, Harp, and Baritone; Mezzo-Soprano, Cello, and Piano; Marima, Voice, and Flute -- only to name a few works.

| Born in Carlisle 1957, and began playing at the tender age of 6, having been given the C scale and a Cornet from my Father Derek johnston himself a Musical Director of Brass Bands and male voice choirs. I won my first medal at 7 years of age, with the Rossington Colliery Band quartet under the baton of Johnnie Jones. Then my family moved to Dinnington Colliery Band where I played Cornet, after a few years I moved to Thurcroft Colliery Band again still on Cornet. From there I moved on to the then famous Cresswell Colliery Band on 2nd Cornet, the principal Cornet at that time was the Famous Mervyn Griffiths, who was as Famous in the North of England as Derek Garside. I spent many a happy hour after practise while the older players were having a pint, I was having individual tuition from Mervyn, who was a fantastic player and this was a great experience for me. My family then moved to Cornwall in 1970 when my Father was offered the position of Musical Director with the Camborne Town band. I was on 2nd cornet for about 18 months and was then moved on to 2nd Euphonium, I was with Camborne Town until 1974, having won the Areas 3 times in the Championship section, gaining 5th place in the Natonal Finals, and also winning the World Music festival in Kerkrade also in 1974. I then moved back to Cresswell Colliery for approx 18 months on Solo Euphonium, which was a great honour for me, also I was working in the colliery as a miner. After this I moved back to Cornwall & joined the St Keverne band on Solo Euphonium and bandmaster, having been trained by my father the art of conducting, I taught the Junior Band, and also when my Father was unavailable to conduct I would step in to take the helm. Having conducted the Band on many occasions, including Songs of praise (BBC TV) and also a tour of Germany. Throughout this time I won many awards in Solo competitions, such as Champion of Cornwall, Champion of the South West of England, all more than once. Also with my Brother Derek on Trombone, Brother in Law Peter Goldsworthy on Soprano, & Cathy Moor on Cornet (now with the BBC Concert Orchestra) we were the St Keverne Band quartet, again at the time unbeatable on many occasions.
I was the bandmaster for The St Keverne Band in Cornwall for 12 years. Musical director of The Redruth Town band for 2 years, at that time 1st section. Also being Musical Director for the Hayle Town Band for 2 years at that time 2nd Section. Due to my employment I moved away from Cornwall to Milton Keynes. Having played baritone for several for months for The Travelsphere Holidays Band (formerly GUS), I left this position due to work commitments, I then created my live internet radio station for Brass Bands to promote the movement to listeners on the internet, please feel free to visit the site www.brassbandradio.co.uk I am sure you will enjoy the music. After a couple of years or so with a heavy work schedule behind me, I decided it was time to get back in to Brass bands, The Wolverton Town Band in Milton keynes were looking for a Conductor, so I offered them my services and stayed with them for 9 months, they were very short of players and it was a task of re building the band to full strength, unfortunately this was not achieved, however the numbers were increasing to a total of about 21 members. But I decided it was time to move on and put my talent to better use. As from January 2006 I have taken up the appointment of Musical Director for the Bradwell Silver Band, Milton Keynes. I am also available to Conduct Bands of any standard, either as a relief Conductor or as a Band trainer to raise the standard of playing, for Contests or Major Concerts.

| Jeremy Justeson has performed as an orchestral soloist across the United States and as a member of the San Antonio Symphony, Dallas Wind Symphony, Allentown Symphony, and the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Solo engagements for the 2001-02 season took him to diverse venues in Alaska, Idaho, California, Texas, Kansas, and Pennsylvania. His performances have been broadcast on radio and television throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia and he has recorded on the Equilibrium and Mark Custom labels.
A proponent of new music, Jeremy Justeson has premiered numerous pieces and has worked with many of the day’s leading composers including Phillip Glass, Donald Grantham, John Harbison, Karel Husa, David Maslanka, James Mobberly, Gunther Schuller, David Del Tredici, and Dan Welcher. Dr. Justeson currently serves as Assistant Professor, Director of the Single Reed Studio, and Assistant Director of Bands at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, with a prior appointment at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.

| Anna Kasket was educated at the North London Collegiate School. She went on to Lincoln College, Oxford, where she was awarded a top First Class degree in English Language and Literature. She took piano, organ, oboe and harmony at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and harpsichord lessons with Robert Woolley. She studied ballet and European traditional dance as a pupil of the Stella Mann School of Dancing, also in London.
After Oxford, Anna was awarded a De Lancey Scholarship by Trinity College, Cambridge, for postgraduate research in English and Continental music and theatre of the 17th century. Her research extended to Jesuit college music-theatre; Roman Catholic poetry of apotheosis; obscure and forgotten music-dramas of the London stage; and musical 'dialogues' of the seventeenth century, amongst other literary, philosophical, visual and musical phenomena
While at Oxford University, Anna acted for OUDS (the Oxford University Dramatic Society), and directed Christopher Marlowe's Dido, Queen of Carthage, at the Oxford Union. She sang in Lincoln College Chapel Choir; and took part in chamber music sessions as a pianist, as well as giving a solo piano recital. At Cambridge University, Anna choreographed Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at Peterhouse Theatre, Handel's Acis and Galatea- at the ADC Theatre, and Gluck's Orfeo - at the Arts Theatre. She directed Holst's Savitri -and performed in The Soldier's Tale (dancing The Princess) for Cambridge University Opera Society (CUOS).- Other performances include Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial By Jury for St. Catharine's College, and a solo vocal recital. Anna was a member of St. Catharine's College Chapel Choir and toured with them to the Cathedrals of France, and to Switzerland, Italy and Holland. After leaving Cambridge, she sang The Sorceress in, and directed Dido and Aeneas for the National Art Collections Fund, at Longstowe Hall, Cambridgeshire; and then went on to sing and act with national companies such as Opera 80, Théâtre de Complicité and the Trestle Theatre Company, with whom she toured extensively in Britain, and performed in Sicily and Australia.
Recently, Anna Kasket has been the director of a madrigal group in Grantchester; performed in Cambridge as a viol player; and she was the permanent accompanist for the King's College School Parents' Choir until the birth of her daughter Gloria in January, 2000. Similarly on hold for a period of maternity leave is Anna's participation in concerts by the vocal group Quintessence, which she founded in 1999, primarily to sing four- five- and six-part music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The group gave its inaugural concert at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. A 'Finale' user for many years, Anna Kasket founded Lancelot Unlimited Music Typesetting (named in memory of her black cat, Lancelot) in 1998, with an academic commission from Professor John Stevens of Cambridge University, who has written Music and Poetry in the Early Tudor Court and Words and Music in the Middle Ages. It is an edition of 'The Earliest English Song-Book' ~ Cambridge University Library MS. Ff.i.17 ~ and is due to be published by Oxford University Press.

| Johan Michael Katz, founder, music director and conductor of the Barn Sinfonietta of Oxted, was born in the Netherlands and educated in the USA. He won five consecutive scholarships to attend The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he received his Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees. His teachers included Walter Susskind, Urs Schneider, Noam Sheriff and Frederick Prausnitz for conducting; Alfred Zighera and Zara Nelsova for Cello and Ross Lee Finney for composition. While in Boston he often worked with Ruben Gregorian and Berj Zamkochian. Leon Gregorian was his inductor into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity.
As Associate Conductor of The New England Conservatory Orchestra it was Johan's great good fortune to make personal contact with many significant contemporary composers and musicians including Aaron Copland, Luigi Dallapiccola, Darius Milhaud, Luigi Nono, Gunther Schuller, Alexander Tcherepnin and Michael Tippett as well as more recently Einojuhani Rautavaara. Over the years it has been fantastic experience to be able to work with many fine performers as well including Szymon Goldberg, Leonard Slatkin, Erich Leinsdorf and Danial Pinkham who were at NEC and Aspen Music school during his years of attendance. Alan Hovhaness was also an alumnus of The New England Conservatory.
Johan has conducted orchestras in the US, Switzerland and the UK. He was actively involved with the Kensington Symphony Orchestra in London, founded the Ann Arbor Chamber Symphony in Michigan and The ISA Brass in Boston. In addition to the standard repertoire, Johan is dedicated to the performance of neglected masterpieces with audience appeal. These would certainly include the significant works of Armenian composers featured on tonight's program. The Barn Sinfonietta is the outgrowth of these ideas on a professional level.

| Larry Kent is Music Director of Florida Pro Musica, a professional chamber ensemble based in the Tampa Bay area on on the west coast of Florida. He has conducted opera, orchestral and choral performances in the U.S., Italy, and China, and his compositions have received numerous performances on both sides of the Atlantic. While completing his doctoral studies he conducted two critically acclaimed performances of his one-act opera, CHARLOTTE, which he composed to an original libretto by John Lawson, Jr. He founded Florida Pro Musica in 1998, and continues to explore both familiar and unfamiliar literature for chorus, chamber orchestra, and smaller ensembles.
Mr. Kent holds degrees in piano performance from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Miami, where he was a student of Ivan Davis. In 1996 he earned his doctorate from the University of South Carolina, where he studied composition with Dick Goodwin and conducting with Donald Portnoy and Manuel Alvarez. Kent was an original member of the Virginia Consort, and in the 2002-2003 season served as a Choral Scholar at Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbia, South Carolina. He directs the Women's Glee Club at The University of Tampa, and teaches conducting at St. Petersburg College.

| Born in London in 1954, Oliver commenced studies on the cello aged 12. He went on to the Royal Academy of Music, London, studying with Vivian Joseph. In 1976, in his final year at the RAM, "Three Songs of Death", poems by Verlaine, for baritone, string quartet and string orchestra was premiered in the Duke's Hall, by David Wilson-Johnson, baritone, the Coull String Quartet and a string orchestra conducted by the composer. In 1977, Oliver moved to Iceland to take up the position of co-principal cellist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. He has lived in Iceland ever since. In recent years, he has devoted more of his time to composition and conducting, and is a member of the Society of Icelandic Composers, having taken Icelandic citizenship in 1989. Oliver now lives and works in and around the capital, Reykjavik. His output consists of music in most genres; song, choral, chamber and orchestral. In 1993, he was commissioned by the British government to compose a work which would be the gift of the British people to the people of Iceland on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the republic. The work, entitled "Mitt folk" or "My People" for baritone soloist and symphony orchestra, was premiered on September 22 by Michael J Clarke and the Iceland S.O., conducted by Osmo Vänskä. It is dedicated to the former president of Iceland, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, on behalf of the Icelandic people.
Much of Oliver's output to date has been for voice, songs for the counter-tenor Sverrir Guðjónsson make up a large part of this output. He has also composed a number of choral works, including a Mass, for chamber-choir, organ and percussion, a Requiem for double choir and a quartet of instruments: clarinet, trombone, cello and bass; a "Missa Brevis" for choir and string orchestra, two settings of the Magnificat, one for soprano solo and three cellos and one for choir and orchestra; various motets, "Ave Maria", "Nunc Dimittis", "Ave Verum", "Tantum Ergo", all for unnacompamied choir. He has also written a setting of the 150th Psalm of David, "Laudate Dominum" for children's/womens' choir and organ, ana a setting of "Totus Tuus" for two choirs. A setting of Psalm 25 vv 15-22 was commissioned by the choir "Schola Cantorum" of Hallgríms Church in Iceland and will receive its premiere in June 1999.
Oliver's chamber-works to date include "5 Little Pieces" for clarinet, cello and piano, "Outside the Circle" for flute, clarinet and string quartet, a string quartet, a wind-quartet and a brass quintet, as well as shorter single-movement works. He is at present working on various commissions, including a work for flute, bass-clarinet and piano, a solo piece for contrabass-trombone and a work for viola and marimba.
As well as his compositional activities, Oliver also teaches cello and theory at various music-schools in and around Reykjavik and also conducts school and community orchestras.

| Francis Knights studied at London, Oxford and Nottingham universities, and has held research and teaching posts at the Royal Northern College of Music, Oxford University and the British Library. His research interests include cathedral music, manuscript sources, performance practice and early keyboard instruments; he is editor of 'Clavichord International' journal, and has published numerous articles and editions. As well as giving recitals on harpsichord, clavichord and organ, he directs the chamber choir Voces Angelicae and the period-instrument baroque ensemble Bach Collegium Oxford.
