If there is any such thing as a conventional background for concert performers, then Raymond Banning has certainly not enjoyed one. Deprived of most of the privileges that help youngsters forge musical careers, he worked his way from a tough council estate to the main performance platforms of this country.

His determination and natural talent led to his first piano concerto performances in his teens, followed by study at the Royal College of Music. Lean years followed, however, when he had little opportunity to develop his playing skills, lacking even a decent piano of his own. But his determined resolve and, many would say, sheer bloody-mindedness, found him beginning to build a career in the 1980s as a recitalist on a national level.

The end of that decade, however, found him dissatisfied with his playing and he decided to thoroughly overhaul his approach to the keyboard. He had become increasingly inspired by the great late Romantic pianists such as Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Cortot and Myra Hess. He was aware that his own playing style lacked the values that those figures embodied. As he put it, "I decided to question everything I had ever been taught, and to have two rules only: to play in a more naturally relaxed manner, and to try and embody the qualities of those great pianists of a past age. Over the next few years my playing became totally transformed, gaining greater expressive depth and tonal range."

Following his dramatic conversion his concerts have attracted large audiences throughout the UK. An unashamed Romantic, he believes that many of the qualities that singled out the great performers of the past are being lost, with much contemporary playing emphasising the percussive nature of the piano. He devotes his attention to qualities of tone, colour and legato playing; qualities which mark his recitals as events of expressive and emotional power.

Name: Sonja Beets
Skills: Composer, Player, Soloist, Teacher, Writer, ensemble coach (plays piano, organ, (celtic) harp.)
Address: France
Links: Website     E-mail

Sonja Beets finished her studies as pianist and organ player at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. After her study she specialized in chamber music with George van Renesse, Nelly Wagenaar and by taking part in master classes both in the Netherlands and abroad, i.e. with Györgi Sebök. Furthermore she studied non-western philosophy, culture and music. While doing so she has learned to play an Indian bow-instrument -the Sarangi- in the dhrupad-style (oldest devote style).

Besides performing music she is active as a composer, painter and poet. A bundle of her poems was published on her own account and she has had several expositions of her paintings. She made a serious start in composing in 1989, stimulated to do so by Györgi Sebök, Martijn van den Hoek, Herman Ulhorn, Bernard Kruysen, Hans Zomer, Elly Ameling… She likes to write compositions suited personally for the people that take part in her own ensemble "Purusha". For this ensemble she created a variety of music, both instrumental and vocal.

After several years of teaching, performing and doing expositions Sonja Beets is now bringing these different disciplines into integration in herself and with others. She took the initiative to start the "Muzenstede" Foundation in 1997. This foundation aims to further the integration and symbiosis between men and art and between the different disciplines of art.

In the year 2000 she undertook to develop a musical tour called the “Muzikale Stadswandeling” in Wijk bij Duurstede (the Netherlands). For this project she set nine poems by the Dutch poet Willem de Mérode to music. She associated these poems with as many characteristic locations in this little town. The poems have been set to music for various combinations of instruments and voices, and recordings of these songs can be hired at the local tourist office, together with a brochure. This project acquired recognition both by the Dutch classical radio and regional television. The project was fully financed by the Muzenstede Foundation. Sonja Beets made her official debut as a composer with the presentation of this cycle of songs. In 2003 she finished composing a chamber opera on a libretto by Tom Sol after a story by Voltaire: “De Argeloze” (l’Ingénu). In 2005 she presented a special project about Flemish cultural heritage in Belgium, in which she integrated several different forms of art. Her work for carillon 'Had we the wings...' has been elected as obligatory work at the public exams 2009 for the highest grade students of the KONINKLIJKE BEIAARDSCHOOL “JEF DENYN” in Mechelen (B). She works and gives concerts with others artists, for whom she also writes new compositions.

I am an experienced piano accompanist although I don't perform professionally. I have over 12 years experience of playing for singing teacher's lessons, previously for Fabian Smith (ex Guildhall) and currently for Helen Watkins. I am also meeting weekly with a retired flautist. I also studied singing with Fabian Smith some years ago. In the past, I worked for many years with a soprano and a contralto and we performed many public concerts, mostly for charity. I also worked with a cellist. I am a great lover of the cello. I have been teaching the piano for 9 years and hold the CT ABRSM. I am an ISM member.

I would very much like to work with other solo singers and/or instrumentalists of a good standard and I would be interested in chamber music. I would want to work to a high standard and would be interested in doing public concerts for charity as well as playing purely for pleasure and to build up a repertoire.
