The core of the Helicon Ensemble is clarinet, 'cello and piano. Simon Parker (clarinet) and Gilmour Macleod (piano) have been performing as a duo since 1989 and the addition of Simon Trentham (cello) in 1996 greatly enriched the ensemble. Programmes vary instrumentally from duos to quartets and the ensemble is expanded with additional players, principally violin, as the repertoire demands. As well as playing the established repertoire the ensemble also explores the diversity of musical cultures, for example the folk styles of Milhaud, Piazzolla and Ireland contrast with the classical styles of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms.
