| The orchestra works on an amateur basis, though there are a high number of instrumental teachers and semi-professional players in it. We do use professional soloists for concerti. We do not usually audition the orchestral players, though woodwind and brass may be an exception. However, we do ask that potential players are of a standard which can cope fairly easily with all the major orchestral works.
The orchestra gives two, or sometimes three concerts each year, each one in support of local charities.
Works played range from major symphonies such as those of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Shostakovitch and Bruckner, to string and wind serenades. The orchestra has given first performances of works by living (or recently living) composers, including David Gow, and its own conductor, Jonathan Trim.
The age range of the members of the orchestra is very wide. Professions of the members, as well as teachers, include doctors, software engineers, programmers and accountants! We welcome new players, especially string players, and there are vacancies in the wind and brass sections from time to time. The members come from a wide area around Swindon. Anyone interested in joining us as players or in receiving details of our concerts as members of our audience, please contact the orchestra's secretary.
