| Composer Michael Mauldin was born in Texas in 1947. Having visited New Mexico as a child, he moved there in 1971 for "the space, the light and the timelessness," after completing a Bachelor of Music degree in Kansas. He completed a Master of Music degree in composition in New Mexico.
Mauldin was named national composer of the year in 1980 by the Music Teachers National Association for his "Voices From Chaco", a concertino for piano and woodwind quintet. His "Fajada Butte" (also inspired by Chaco Canyon in New Mexico) was performed by the National Repertory Orchestra at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1985 at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Mauldin served for seven years as the director of the Albuquerque Boy Choir (of which his sons are alumni) which grew to three choirs that tour, record and proceed through a rigorous musiciansip program. His choral compositions have sold thousands of copies in the USA, Europe and Australia.
