| Alex Shapiro was born in New York City in 1962 and educated at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music. She studied composition with Ursula Mamlok and John Corigliano before moving to Los Angeles in 1983, and composed scores for feature films, television and documentary projects for many years before returning her focus to concert music. Her award-winning chamber works are programmed regularly, and as a composer, essayist, lecturer and panelist she is an active participant in the Southern California music community.
Alex revels in the triangular relationship between composer, musicians and audience, and creates expressive compositions, often commissioned by musicians who have previously performed her work. A recipient of a 2000/2001 Artist Fellowship from The California Arts Council in recognition of her rhythmic and lyrical chamber music, Alex has also received grants from ASCAP and Mu Phi Epsilon. Ms. Shapiro is the former Vice President of The Society of Composers & Lyricists and serves as an officer of both NACUSA and The College Music Society. She resides in Malibu, Ca. and frequently updates her website, “http://www.alexshapiro.org” with concert information and audio clips of her works.
