Born in Sri-Lanka, Nihal won a scholarship to study voice in England, afterwhich he toured Asia and the Orient giving concerts, radio and television performances.
In Canada, as a Opera Singer, he was featured in the roles of Nadir in Les Pecheurs de Perles by Bizet, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly by Puccina, Arturo in I Puritani by Bellini, Des Grieux in Manon by Massenet and Pollione in Norma by Bellini.
Nihal has also been the Tenor Soloist in The Seven Last Words of Christ by Dubois and Stabat Mater by Rossini. He has also performed several solo operatic recitals in Canada and the United States.
Together with his wife, Soprano Caroleve Thompson- Fonseka, they have given four joint recitals, produced a CD called A Treasury of Christmas Jewels and recently performed at Toronto's prestigious Roy Thomson Hall.
