The New York Choral Society, founded in 1958, has earned a reputation as New York’s leading avocational chorus. It has become known by audiences and critics for the quality of its performances and the diversity of its repertoire, which encompasses popular choral masterworks as well as many compositions rarely heard in concert halls. Over the years the Society has presented ten world premiers including works commissioned by Morton Gould, Paul Alan Levi, Joelle Wallach and Robert DeCormier, noted composer, arranger and Music Director Emeritus of the New York Choral Society, which he conducted for seventeen years.

The Society is frequently in demand as guest artists, most recently appearing in its ninth appearance at the Richard Tucker Music Foundation Gala in Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center televised nationally on Public Broadcasting System TV stations. Other recent guest performances include appearing with Andrea Bocelli at Liberty State Park, which was broadcast live on the Public Broadcasting System, in the History Channel's 'Time Machine' at South Street Seaport, and its third appearance on the NBC Today TV show. In November 1999 the Society appeared along with pop music diva Celine Dion in her farewell concert broadcast from Radio City Music Hall. Additional guest appearances have included performances with the American Composers Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, Juilliard Symphony (with world renowned Jahja Ling conducting), Lincoln Center Festival (with Yehudi Menuhin conducting), New Jersey Symphony, New York City Ballet (with Leonard Bernstein conducting), New York Philharmonic, Opera Orchestra of New York, and at the 1998 Grammy Awards, singing with Aretha Franklin who substituted for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti.
