Rachel Ashton was born in Liverpool to a farming family. Following her first degree in Linguistics and Italian at Lancaster University she embarked on a career with the Civil Service. She subsequently studied for a postgraduate diploma in vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama supported by a bursary from the Laura Ashley Foundation. She currently studies under Suzanne Murphy and Neil Howlett. A flexible and versatile performer, Rachel enjoys performing works from opera, operetta, lieder, Russian song, oratorio/sacred music and musical theatre. Operatic performances include principal roles in excerpts from Street Scene as Anna Maurrant and The Four Note Opera, (both for RWCMD), Eugene Onegin as Tatyana, Falstaff as Alice Ford and Der Freischutz as Agathe (all for Oxenfoord International, conducted by James Lockhart) Idomeneo as Elettra (for Handmade Opera in Umbria Italy, conducted by Nicholas Cleobury) and Die Fledermaus as Adele in Aragon, Spain with European Chamber Opera. Full operatic/operetta roles include The Marriage of Figaro as the Countess, The Magic Flute as Pamina, Patience in the title role, The Pirates of Penzance as Mabel, Trial by Jury as The Plaintiff and The Sorcerer as Aline (for The National Trust at Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire). Rachel has also performed as a chorister for British Youth Opera, Ensemble 10:10 (the “new music” division of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra), Huddersfield Choral Society, City of Manchester Opera and South Wales Male Voice Choir (on their album 'Penrhiw').
