| Matthew Ash was born in Leicester in 1978 and began playing the piano, under the tuition of classical improvisation expert Nigel Allcoat, at the age of 6. After moving to the North West area in 1986, Matthew continued his studies with the late Katrina George, and then Marjorie Clementi of the RNCM, before studying with Andrew West and John Clegg as an undergraduate at the University of Lancaster. Matthew graduated in 2000 with a BMus(Hons) degree and was awarded the Denis McCaldin Performance Prize for the quality of his final recital. Matthew has also benefitted from private and public master class sessions with British concert pianists Martin Roscoe, and Robert Bell and, as a teenager, was an annual recipient of the Lancashire County Music Award - given by audition to a small number of promising musicians.
As a solo recitalist, Matthew has performed across the North West for Fylde Arts; Lytham St.Annes Music Circle; Garstang Arts Centre; Penrith Piano Circle; ULMS Lunchtime Concerts; and Grundy Midday Recitals. Matthew has also appeared as piano soloist with Fylde Sinfonia and Blackpool Symphony Orchestra in concertos by Grieg (A Minor); Rachmaninov (No.2); and Beethoven (No.5) as well as the Litolff Scherzo. Matthew recently formed a piano duo with pianist Adam Greig, also a postgraduate at the University of Lancaster, and they are currently developing programmes for future performances.
